UniAbuja ASUU chairman promises colleagues, students better days

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) chapter chairman-elect, Dr. Kassim Umaru has promised better days for his university community.
Speaking to journalists shortly after his election, Dr. Umaru who had served as vice chairman for two tenures before his election as chairman, promised to bring his experience to bear in the union. He also said that with support from his colleagues, he promised to work with the university management to take the institution to greater heights. Answering question from the journalists, he maintained that nobody want rancour in the system, stressing that the purpose of ASUU is to synergise with the management to make the system work better, adding that carrying people along under his leadership is a priority.
He further said that ASUU is a union of intellectuals, with laws that guide its activities, so his tenure would witness unprecedented compliance with the union’s rules and regulations.
“The constitution is there. My own is just to provide leadership that is transparent. As you know ASUU is all about fairness and justice. I believe God will see us through,” he said. He promised to work with the management to ensure that there is fairness and equity in tackling all pending issues in the university.
He also promised to work with the authorities to ensure that things are done properly and everybody is treated fairly. The chairman maintained that academic staff union is not a branch of the administration. “We are a trade union. We are on our own.
Our principle is fairness, equity and justice. I promise to maintain the peaceful ambience, and what accounts for peace in an environment of fairness, justice and equity.” He said he would make sure lecturers work harder to produce more first class students in the next convocation.
The former chairman, Associate Professor Ben Ugwoke attributed the harmonious and peaceful relationship he had enjoyed during his tenures to the congress, maintaining that he was just a chief servant or a messenger in the union, and advised the current chairman to always ensure that congress resolutions are implemented to the letter, and to abide by the union’s constitution.
