Umueze community resorts to self-help as govt delays intervention

The people of Umueze Ogwa community in Mbaitoli local government area of Imo state have finally resolved to apply their usual self-help spirit to rehabilitate the major road in the land, the Ekeoha-Ogbommii road, which has remained a death trap to the people for months now, with no hope coming from the Imo state government in spite of memos written to that effect.

Our correspondent, who visited the area, Tuesday, gathered that in the last few days, major rehabilitation work has commenced on the road after a passionate appeal was made by the President of Umueze Progressive Union (UPU), Dr Nixon Udeji to his equally passionate and committed brothers at both home and abroad to contribute their financial resources to enable the community  rehabilitate the road to make it accessible to those who would be coming home for the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Information available to our news desk has it that a lot of money has gone into the project already, while more would be needed to complete it.

A look at the list of expenses on the road recently released by the UPU secretary, Eddy Ahamba Iwuanyanwu, shows that an average of N750,000 was being spent on the ongoing road work on a daily basis.

According to him,” when pay loader is involved, an average of N1,000,000 is spent on the work. A pay loader is N250,000 daily, excavator is N300,000, while 20 tons of truck is N150,000. And three trucks are used every day for the job to be executed.”

He seized the opportunity once again to call on  his brothers and sisters whose passion for the betterment of the community is beyond description to join the bandwagon of committed donors to ensure the success of the road rehabilitation.
