UI College of Medicine students protest 82-day-blackout at UCH

Students of University of Ibadan, College of Medicine, at the University College Hospital (UCH), Wednesday protested over the 82- day- old power outage at the hospital since its power supply was disconnected by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

Led by the president of the Students Union (SU), Bolaji Aweda, the students staged a protest around the hospital premises with placards condemning the power outage.

During the protest, the SU president stated that the power outage has been affecting the students and their studies as there was no light in and across the hospital complex for the past 82 days.

“We are protesting against what is happening. And of course, our students are affected. For 82 days, there is no light at UCH and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC,” he said.

Aweda added, “IBEDC has demanded that the UCH should pay its debt for them to restore the light.”

The protesting students tasked the UCH management to ensure that light is restored back to the hospital as soon as possible.

The Education Rights Campaign (ERC) in a statement by its branch secretary, Nnamdi Ochi, on the protest by the students called for immediate restoration of power and regular supply at UCH, saying, ” the protest is long overdue”.

“The Education Rights Campaign, ERC, the University of Ibadan branch welcomes the decision by  Bolaji Aweda leadership of the Students’ Union to organise a protest at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan on Wednesday, 23rd January, 2025 over a lingering crisis of power outage within the hospital,” it said.
