Uduaghan to lawmakers: Strike a balance between political, legislative duties

Governor of Delta state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has advised members of the Delta state House of Assembly to strike a balance between their political activities and their legislative duties.

Uduaghan gave the advice in Asaba when the new Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Onwusanya, was formally introduced to him.
He noted that there might be the temptation of House members to pay more attention to campaigning for the 2015 elections, thereby neglecting their legislative duties.

He said: “We are in a critical period also known as the political period where members of the House may be tempted to pay more attention to the field rather than their legislative duties. You must all try to create a balance between your activities on the field and your legislative duties.
“2015 general elections are not far; let there be a balance between what we do in the field and what we do in the House. There are still bills to be passed; a lot is needed to be done in terms of your legislative duties.”

While congratulating Onwusanya, Uduaghan urged him to be aware that all the 29 members of the Assembly were equal and, therefore, should deal with issues that concerned his colleagues with mutual respect.

Uduaghan noted that the immediate past Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, made a lot of contributions towards the development of the House and reiterated that the executive would always ensure harmonious relationship with the legislative.

He added that the new speaker had a challenge to improve on the achievements of the former speaker and assured that the harmonious relationship between the executive and the House would be sustained.
Earlier, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Basil Ganagana, said the new speaker was elected following the resignation of Ochei as the speaker.
