Truancy: Zamfara education ministry suspends 207 teachers

The Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has disclosed that a total of 207 teachers have been suspended and their three months’ salaries stopped due to truancy in their respective schools.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Malam Wadatau Madawaki, made the disclosure while addressing newsmen in Gusau Friday. 

He said a Committee was set up by the Ministry to ascertain the level of attendance to work by the teachers across three Senatorial Zones, adding that based on its report and recommendations, 207 teachers, particularly secondary school teachers, were not attending to their work in their respective schools. 

“The Ministry, after receiving the report, notified the state government under the leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal and the Ministry of Finance and finally recommended that the affected teachers be suspended.

“Consequently, the state government, through the Ministry, suspended their salaries pending the final steps by the state government on the matter.”

Blueprint reports that the affected teachers gathered at the commissioner’s office and admitted their mistake and formally tendered an official letter of apology individually to the Ministry. 

The commissioner after receiving their apology letters, which confessed to their fault, promised to take the letters to the governor.
