Troops arrest notorious bandit kingpin Wurgi in Zamfara

The Nigerian Army’s 1st Brigade has arrested a top bandit leader, Bako Wurgi (alias Baka Na Garba) who is suspected to have been involved in the killing of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa in Sokoto state.

The operation was carried out on December 14 at about 10pm following a tip-off that Wurgi was in a hospital in Shinkafi, Zamfara state, following injuries sustained in a clash with some rivals.

Two other bandits escaped while the officers managed to arrest the driver who helped take Wurgi to the hospital.

The emir of Gobir was kidnapped on July 9 in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state and was killed on August 22 after a ransom was not agreed upon.

Wurgi was reportedly instrumental in the kidnapping and killing of the emir.

Wurgi, who is an international arms smuggler, is related to the leader of the bandits, Bello Turji, through his grandfather.

The arrest of the terrorist is a major achievement in the efforts of security agencies to address the problems of insecurity in the North-west and Nigeria as a whole.
