Tribunal set to hear petitions against INEC, Gyang, over UPP logo omission

The Plateau state House of Assembly and National Assembly Electoral Commission has fixed 25th June for hearing into a petition challenging the returned of Senator Istifsnus Gyang, as Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial district.

Hon. Sanusi Muhammad Inuwa of the United People’s Party (UPP) in a petition no EPT/PL/NA/01/2019 is challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and two others, over omission of his party logo in the 2019 General election.

In the petition Inuwa is seeking the tribunal to determine wether he was validly nominated by his party and wether or not the 1st respondent Senator Istifanus Gyang, of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was validly returned by INEC in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Acts.

He is also asking the tribunal to annul the election and order INEC to conduct fresh election.

During Monday’s proceedings, Counsel to the petitioner, M.A. Tauwa, said he would present four witnesses andclose his case in one day.

Similarly, Counsel to the 1st respondent, Niri Darung, told the tribunal that he will presents four witnesses, while the 3rd and 4th respondent’s counsels, being PDP and INEC, IG Shanding and    KL Olawoye, said they have one witnesses each to present.

The tribunal chairman Justice, T. N.Nzegwu, adjourned the matter to 25th June.
