Traditional rulers from Edo North and Central Senatorial District yesterday condemned the planned coronation of Ijaw pere (king) in the state and described the move as “an abominable installation.”
Addressing journalists in Benin City yesterday, the Vice Chairman of Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, Ehidiamen I, the Onojie of Okpoji, in company of other royal fathers, warned Ijaw living in the state’s coastline against illegal any move that could desecrate the royal Benin land.
While stating that Gelegele community which houses most of the Ijaw resident in the state was part of Benin Province, in the present day Edo state, the traditional ruler declared: “There is no other kingdom in Edo south and there is only one king in the kingdom which is the Oba of Benin.
“It is never heard that another person in the name of pere wants to claim a kingdom in the same Benin kingdom which has the Oba as the only recognised king. This action amounts to abomination.”
