Traders want AMAC chair, director jailed for ‘illegal demolition’

Over 5, 000 traders of the demolished Karu Market have approached the High Court sitting at Apo, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) asking it to commit the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman, Hon Micah Jiba, and the Director, Development Control of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Yahaya Yusuf, to prison.

The whole market was said to have been demolished on November 15, 2013, against the court order.
Counsel to the traders, Barrister Francis Agbo, told the presiding judge in Court 15 of the Apo High Court, Silvanus Oriji, that Jiba and Yusuf’s action amounted to contempt of court; hence, they should be committed to prison.

Arguing, Counsel to the AMAC chairman and director, Development Control, Barrister C.O. Agashieze, who told the court that he only saw the court process a day before the hearing, applied for more days to be able to study it and file a proper response.
“I saw this yesterday around evening. So, we have not been able to file a response or even see the director, Development Control, himself. I will meet them to know the terms of settlement,” Agashieze told the court.
The judge, Silvanus Oriji, adjourned the case to June 17, 2014, for hearing.
