Tinubu seeks improved salaries  for judicial officers

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded to the Senate Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill, 2024, for consideration and passage .

The bill as stated in President Tinubu’s letter which was read in plenary on Wednesday by the President of the Senate , Godswill Akpabio , primarily seeks for improved welfare for judicial officers. 

Tinubu, in the  letter titled: “Transmission of Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances  Bill, 2024” said : ” I forward herein, the Judicial Office Holders, Salaries and Allowances  Bill 2024, for the kind consideration of the Senate.

“The Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill, 2024 seeks to prescribe salaries and allowances and fringe benefits for  judicial officials to end the prolong stagnation in their remuneration and to reflect contemporary socioeconomic realities.

“While I hope that the Judicial Office holders salaries and allowances bill 2024 will be carefully, yet  expeditiously considered and passed by the Senate, please accept distinguished Senate President, and distinguished senators, the assurances of my highest esteem”.

The President explained that the request was “in accordance  with the provisions of Section 58, sub Section Two of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.”

The bill the President added in the letter that it seeks to  establish a new legal framework  for remuneration of judicial officials and would also ensure significant improvement in their welfare, capacity and independence of the judiciary.
