Tension as terrorists takeover Zamfara highway, several travellers kidnapped

Armed terrorists mostly regarded as bandits on Wednesday blocked the busy Gusau–Funtua highway and kidnapped an unspecified number of travellers.

According to eyewitnesses, the terrorists who rode on about 50 motorcycles with three persons each, mounted a roadblock around the Tazame axis of the highway around 7am, abducting commuters and taking them into the bush.

Speaking on the incident, the Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed that additional Police mobile units have been deployed to the area to assist the military in clearing the road and restoring order.

None of the kidnapped travellers have been rescued by the security authorities as at the time of filling this.

Zamfara state has remained a hotbed for terrorists activities in the past years, alongside other northwest states including Katsina, Kaduna with north-central bordering state Niger suffering same.
