Tennis: Clement, Favour win Kaduna/Nocaco U-16 clay court tourney


 

Clement Dickson and Favour Moses emerged winners of the maiden Kaduna state/ Nocaco U16 Clay Court Tennis Tournament that ended on Sunday in Kaduna. 

Clement Dickson, who was seeded number one for the round robin tournament, made mincemeat of his oppositions beating Abubakar Hayattu in two straight sets 4-0, 4-0. 

Favour Moses also defeated her final opponent, Bunmi Ojo in two straight sets 4-0, 4-0 to win the girls category of the maiden tournament. Speaking later, Favour said she worked hard and never underestimated any of her opponents in the tournament to ensure her victory. 

The tournament, which had 54 entries, also had players above 16 years, who were categorised in 19 and under,a category that was won by Fabian Joseph who defeated Benjamin Ayuba in the final. 

The Managing Director of Nocaco Ltd, sponsors of the weeklong event, Mr Jean Claude Jallon said they are ready to sustain their sponsorship of the tournament. “The young boys did well (in the final).

“The event shall continue in the coning years and Nocaco shall continue to support and develop tennis and sports in Kaduna state. I’m happy with the organisation of this tournament and I want to give you appointment for next year.”

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Sports Development, Prof. Kabiru Mato, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Umar Ibrahim, said the ministry is impressed with the organisation of the tournament and would do everything possible to sustain it and ensure it is an annual or biannual event.

“Kaduna state government is doing everything possible to revive  sports activities and engage youths positively in sports activities. It was an annual event before going comatose, but we are trying to see his we revive it and make it annual or biannual. 

The President of Kaduna Club, Dr Jimoh Aliyu said that the tournament brought back find memories of the past when the court used to witness national and international competitions before going comatose. “The revival of this tennis court is on its way from all indications.”
