Taraba: 23 killed in 61 road crashes in 6 months

Official data obtained from the Taraba state command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) reveals that at least, 23 people have died and others sustained various degrees of injuries in 61 road crashes in the state between January and June 2018.

Ben Akunne, who released the data exclusively to Blueprint in Jalingo the state capital, said the command was making efforts to establish more units of the corps in Gembu, Bali and Zing to ensure spread and efficacy in their operations.
The assistant commandant also revealed that the state government on the other hand has set up a task force to curb the menace of tricycle operators popularly called KEKE NAPEP in Jalingo the state capital, to curtail excesses of the operators all in deliberate efforts to reduce road crashes Explaining further he said the command has intensified education and awareness among road users in places of worship, motor parks and other public places on the need to ensure safety while on the road.
The Assistant Sector Command Operations who decried the activities of the operators of tricycle lamented that most of them were illiterates and could hardly follow instructions.
Akunne noted that there was upsurge in the number of tricycles in the city of Jalingo because of the crisis in the neighbouring states which forced people to take refuge in the Taraba, hence most of them take tricycle as a means of livelihood but their ignorance put their passengers at a great risk.
