Anambra State government has announced a decision to organise a football championship to hunt for young talents among traders over 1000 markets in the State.
The Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Mr Patrick-Estate Onyedum, who stated this while inaugurating the 20-man committee in his office at Awka, said the event will hold between October and November 2023.
Onyedum, who explained that the championship which was being organised by ASSDC in conjunction with Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA), would feature three games such as football, tennis and table tennis.
According to him, governor Soludo decided to bring in the markets in his sports development programme to accommodate traders as critical stakeholders in the state.
“These games have been carefully selected because of the health and employment opportunities in them, so you are going to play for healthier living, play for leisure and also play for economic reasons.
“Apart from the prize money to be won, there is also an opportunity for hidden young talents in the markets to be spotted and mentored to become professional sportsmen, so bring out your best,” he said.
Contributing, the Public Relations Officer of ASMATA, Mr Emeka Unaegbu, said they were excited about the proposal and ready to give in all their support to make it a success.
