Paul Onuachu was on target in Southampton’s 2-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at St Mary’s Stadium.
Jørgen Strand Larsen headed Wolves in front with the only meaningful chance of the first half in the 19th minute.
Larsen doubled Wolves’ advantage two minutes after the break.
Onuachu came off the bench to reduce the deficit for the hosts 15 minutes from time.
It was the Nigeria international’s third league goal of the season for the Saints.
His compatriot, Joe Aribo, was also in action for Southampton in the match.
Aribo was replaced by Jack Stephens in stoppage time.
Onuachu expressing his disappointment after the match said “it’s difficult scoring my first goal in front of the [home] fans and we’re losing, it’s not good enough and we need to do better as a team and individually,” he told the club’s official website.
“We had a good start in the first 20 minutes but it’s difficult to explain this loss because we’re playing on our home ground and we had the feeling we were going to beat Wolves.
“You could see we were the better team, even though we lost. It’s just not good enough.
“For the fans, for the team it’s good to get the goal, but we lost, I’m not really pleased because we have to win this game and it’s very disappointing.”
