The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied engaging German tactician, Winfried Schafer as Super Eagles Coach as widely reported in several credible media outlet in the country Monday morning.
According to several reports, the NFF has reached an agreement with Schafer, who has previously managed Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, to take charge of Nigeria’s senior national team.
Schafer’s experience, which includes winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2002 and leading Jamaica to the Caribbean Cup title in 2014, made him a top candidate.
Contrary to report in some media, the federation, though, still in search of a new gaffer for the 2023 African Nations Cup finalists, claimed it never had discussion with the 74-year old German.
A top official of the NFF, speaking anonymously told BSNSports.com.ng, “though the federation is still searching for a befitting coach for the Super Eagles but we are not in contact with Schafer.”
Winfried “Winnie” Schäfer (born 10 January 1950) is a German football manager and former player. He has played for and managed Borrusia Monchengladbach, managed VFB Stuttgart, Cameroon, Al Ain and Al Akor as his last club in 2021.
Blueprint Sport can report that just few weeks ago, the NFF announced appointing Bruno Labbadia as the new Super Eagles head coach and four days later the German turned down the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) offer due to unresolved tax disputes in his home country.
Austin Eguavoen was drafted to lead the 2013 African champions in the Matchday 1 and 2 of the 2025 African Nations Cup qualifier against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Super Eagles humiliated Benin Republic with a 3-0 thrashing in Nigeria and played a 0-0 draw with Rwanda in Kigali to top the AFCON qualifier Group D table with four points.
