Super Eagles captain named AFCON 2023 player of the tournament, Morocco gets 2025 hosting flag

Nigeria’s Stand in Captain, William Troost-Ekong is AFCON 23 Player of The Tournament.

Nigeria’s Stand in Captain, William Troost-Ekong playing his last AFCON games was voted as the Player of the tournament. 

Ekong had scored three goals in the tournament including the beautiful header in the final and stood as a rock of Gibraltar in the Nigerian defence.

Nigeria had dropped Ekong from the team that had an unimpressive record at the AFCON Qualifiers until public outcry brought him back into the team. He was refused call to camp because of his alleged agitating spirit for players right.

Mamelodi Sundowns Goalkeeper and Captain of South Africa, Romwen Williams got the Golden Gloves for the Best Keeper of the tournament.

Top goalscorer who got the Golden Boot is Spain born Emilio Nsue of Equatorial Guinea who scored five goals, three of them Hat trick against the new Champions, Ivory Coast.

South Africa collected their Bronze medals having won the 3rd place match against DR Congo.

The Super Eagles players who had stopped weeping enjoyed the guard of Honor from the Champions Elephants of Ivory Coast as they filed out to collect their silver medals from the top dignitaries including Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima.

Nigeria’s Coach, Jose admitted that the Elephants were far better in the game though his team scored first against run of play. 

He refused to talk on the future of the Super Eagles saying it is left to the NFF.

Earlier, the AFCON flag was transferred to Morocco that will host the tournament in 2025.
