The newly-elected officials of the Student Union Government (SUG) and National Association of Niger State Students (NANISS) at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (IBBUL), Niger state, have been inaugurated by the school management.

The oath of allegiance was administered on them by the university legal officer, Barrister Hassan Ndaliman. The newly-sworn in student-leaders will pilot the affairs of their various student bodies for the next one year.

The new SUG officials include Baba Alhaji Idris (president), Amina Jiya (vice president), Bello Ibrahim (secretary-general), Usman Shaba (assistant secretary-general), and Tanko Al-Hassan (treasurer).

The NANISS executives include Isah Shuaibu (president), Maryam Lokogoma (vice president), Muhammad Mustapha (secretary-general), Muhammad Zainab (treasurer) and Abubakar Bobi (financial secretary).

At the colourful event, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, the school vice chancellor admonished the unionists to always exhibit good leadership traits and eschew acts capable of not only denting their image, but that of their respective student associations.

While urging them to strive in bequeathing enduring legacies, Maiturare noted that the only way the newly-inaugurated student-leaders can justify the confidence reposed in them by other students is to remain committed to uplifting the welfare of their fellow students.

“On behalf of the university management, I congratulate you as you assume office today. However, I am urging you to showcase good and stellar leadership qualities. Avoid unbecoming conducts and wanton scandals. You were elected to serve meritoriously, diligently and patriotically. As such, anything short of good leadership will not be accepted by your fellow students or condoned by the school management,” he warned.

The VC further advised them not to be carried away by the activities of their associations, saying they should work hard to earn good class of degrees that would make them become attractive job-seekers after graduation.

“I am urging our new SUG and NANISS officials to embark on projects that would impact positively on the lives of teeming IBBUL students. And equally, I charge you to be good ambassadors of our university, at all times.”

Earlier, the Dean, Student Affairs (DSA), Dr. Aliyu Ishaq Ma’ali, stated that though the elections into the offices of SUG and NANISS were keenly contested, the exercises were conducted peacefully, and transparently. He then appreciated the support of the management and other stakeholders that immensely contributed towards making the elections a remarkable success.

Dr. Ma’ali, while advising the new officials to live above board, also assured them of his readiness to welcome their constructive suggestions, with a view to promoting and nurturing a healthy relationship among the students and other members of the university community.
