Student’s murder: Cross River wants IGP to fish out culprits

Cross River state government has given 24-hour ultimatum to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to arrest and prosecute the suspected murder of an undergraduate, Miss Joy Odama.

Governor Benedict Ayade who gave this ultimatum yesterday at a press briefing in Abuja called for the conduct of toxicology in 48 hours to determine the real cause of Joy’s death.

Odama, a second year Mass Communication student of Cross River State University of Technology, died in December, in circumstances suspected to be ritual killing in Karmo, Abuja.

While controversy leading to the death ensued, the family conducted autopsy on the corpse and returned that she died of acute cocaine poison, while police autopsy showed that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poison.

Governor Benedict Ayade, represented by the Director-General, Due Process and Price Intelligence Bureau, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, made the call at a press briefing in Abuja, also said the attorney-general of the state “has been mandated to liaise with Attorney-General of the Federation to commence legal action on the matter.”

Apart from the principal suspect, Alhaji Usman Adamu, the state government also called for the arrest of the Assistant Inspector of General of Police, Intelligence, Umoru Usman Shehu, and some officers of the Karmo Police Station for alleged complicity in the murder.

According to him, the state governor has promised to do a personal letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue to ensure that Adamu and his accomplices are arrested.

“The governor will ensure that justice is done. As a government, his Excellency, has given immediate instruction to the attorney-general of Cross River state to immediately commence action with the office of the attorney-general of the federation.

“We want to place on record that this is one death that will bring to global attention the very wicked and callous of the Nigerian police.

“We call on the inspector-general of police and the governor has  said he will do a personal letter of President Muhammadu Buhari on this issue because one AIG has been indicted, staff of the Karmo Police Station have all been mentioned and the Alhaji Usman who has been walking as a free man.”
