‘SON certification for MSMEs sub-sector soon’

Th e Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has said it is in the process of commencing certifi cation of services off ered by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) subsector. According to SON Director General, Mr Osita Anthony Aboloma, who made this known in Abuja during this year’s African Day of Standardisation celebration, added that the MSMEs certifi cation will be in barbing, tailoring, masonry, cobbling, events management, automobile maintenance/repairs services, car washing, carpentry etc. He said the aim is to improve the quality of services rendered by the practitioners to satisfy consumers’ needs, create orderliness and enhance competitiveness that will promote continual improvement. “SON is not unmindful of the activities of some Nigerians that engage in sharp practices such as importation or smuggling of substandard products, faking, and

adulteration, amongst others. “SON is currently synergizing with sister agencies and is calling on all Nigerians to be the vanguard of our dear nation to ‘if you see something unwholesome, say something to SON’. He said the annual celebration is a day set aside to demonstrate to the world that the continent has equally embraced standardisation, and warned smugglers of fake products to desist from such act or face the full wrath of the law. Th e theme of this year’s celebration is “Th e role of standardisation in facilitating human rights with particular focus on the rights of women.” Several papers were presented and deliberated upon by panellists while prizes were off ered to the three winners of the 2017 African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) essay competition.
