Police in Sokoto state Wednesday said 575 suspected criminals for various offences were arrested between January and December 2024.
This was contained in a press statement issued by the command’s public relations officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’I.
He said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, has been making frantic effort to rid Sokoto off criminal activities.
He stated further that the commissioner has within a short period been able to implement innovative strategies aimed at tackling emerging security challenges, foster stronger community partnerships and ensure enhanced welfare and training programs for the officers and men.
DSP Rufa’i said the strategies yielded fruitful results in such a way that the command made significant strides in notable increase in arrests and recoveries.
The statement reads: “It is gratifying to mention that the strategies yielded fruitful results in such a way that, the command made significant strides in a notable increase in arrests and recoveries.
“For instance, 575 suspects were arrested for major crimes from January to date.”
He gave details of the arrest as 51 armed robbery suspects, 52 kidnap suspects, 9 rape suspects, 129 culpable homicide suspects, 18 attempted murder suspects, 31 suspects for offences against properties and 24 offences against persons.
Others were, causing grievous hurt suspects, 7 unnatural offence , 6 terrorism suspects, 90 theft cases, 39 CBT, 11 suspects for receiving stolen goods 61 cases for mischief by fire, 8 cases for unlawful possession of firearms, 17 suspects for breach of public peace and disturbances.
“The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed, came with an agenda to ensure safety, security of citizenry, uphold the values of justice, fairness and accountability.
“Sokoto state is considered as one of the most peaceful states in the country if not for the recent issues of kidnapping and banditry. But it is not totally free from other forms of crime, which include; culpable homicide, rape, vandalism, drug abuse, motorcycle snatching, activities of fraudsters, animal rustling and very few cases of armed robbery.
“Today, I am confident to clearly state that he has made significant efforts in reducing the aforementioned menace to the barest minimum,” he said.
He stated further that the commissioner has within a short period he assume duty implemented innovative strategies to tackle emerging security challenges, fostered stronger community partnerships, and enhanced welfare and training programs for the officers and men.
Similarly, the command has made recovery of firearms that included nine (9) AK47 rifles, 3 Magazines and 341 rounds of live ammunitions, four (4) Locally made AK47 rifles and two live ammunitions, One (1) Locally made Pistol one (1) Dane Gun, three (3) Motor vehicles and Tanker truck , ninety Seven (97) Rustled Cows, 29 Sheep’s and one Donkey, twenty Seven (27) Rescued Victims.
He also said the command has received allocation of One Toyota Hilux and 5 Hunter motorcycles from Force Headquarters, Abuja, which were duly deployed to areas of need to enhance the commands operational capability in line with the IGPs Safer School Initiative.
