Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto state has expressed his administration’s determination to revive all the abandoned historical sites in the state.
He dropped this hint during the closing ceremony of this year’s NTA Sokoto Network Centre Cultural Display.
Represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Dadi Adare, Governor Aliyu vowed to revive all the major historical monuments abandoned in the state.
According to him, Sokoto as the home of culture and tradition, has a large number of historical sites that need to be revived and preserved for the benefit of the upcoming generations.
“We have important historical sites such as Tabkin Kwato in Gudu LGA, Surame in Silame LGA, Alkalawa in Sabon Birni LGA and Hubbaren Shehu in Sokoto North LGA, among others.
“These, if revived, could improve the revenue generation of Sokoto state and further expose our rich cultural heritage to the outside word”, he added.
The governor appealed for media support in the revival of the abandoned historical sites in the state.
He called for support from the NTA in particular in the documentation of the historical sites in the interest of the state.
Also speaking, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko commended NTA for organising the programme meant to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Sokoto people to the outside world.
He said the annual event would educate and remind the upcoming generations about their culture, tradition, norms and values, which researchers and tourists would be interested in.
Represented by Ambassador Sahabi Isa Gada, Senator Wamakko called on NTA to sustain the commendable tempo and ensure that their programmes always promote positive things about Nigeria, especially unity, peace and tranquility.
Other speakers at the event included the representative of the Minister of State, Works as well as that of the Sultan of Sokoto, among other dignitaries.
The event was also attended by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, and the 23 local government chairmen in the state
During the event, Senator Wamakko donated N2 million in aid of the cultural display.
During the two-day event, all the 23 local government areas displayed their rich cultural heritage, with lots of merriment.
