Sokoto 2023: Bafarawa lied – Sokoto police

The police command in Sokoto and the state security service have disassociated themselves from a viral video circulating in which a PDP chieftain, former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, blamed his successor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, for refusing to sign an alleged peace accord.

In a statement signed by the command’s PPRO, DSP Sanusi Abubakar, and made available to newsmen, both the police and the state security service refuted the claim by Bafarawa that the leader of the APC in the state, Senator Wamakko, shun the peace accord and warned the PDP chieftain who had ruled the state for eight years to refrain from rumour mongering.

According to the joined statement signed the PPRO, both the police commissioner and the state director of the security service were working with leaders of the two major parties towards adopting measures that would help in containing political disturbances such as violence and youth restlessness before, during and after elections.

“For the avoidance of doubt, members of the public should note that the initiative which is aimed at consultation with the elder statesmen and expected to be led by Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is a call for these highly respected statesmen to come together by putting aside their political differences and come up with a joint statement for their party supporters to embrace peace for the good of the state. But neither the police command nor the state security service is aware of any form to be signed as claimed in the audio released by Bafarawa’s media handlers”, the statement added.

The joint statement from the two security outfits therefore advised both Bafarawa and Wamakko to settle their political differences and work towards peace in the state.

Meanwhile, former Governor Wamakko in a broadcast to the people of Sokoto state, condemned the actions of Bafarawa for spreading falsehood and advised him to political status rather than allowing personal interest and emotions to becloud his reasoning and judgement.

Wamakko called on all law-abiding citizens to come out on Saturday and vote without fear as security agencies in the state are ready to provide adequate protection as seen through the Operation KULE CHAS.

He assured that the APC would support all laudable measures put in place by security agencies in the state as well as INEC officials for free and fair elections on Saturday.
