Shehu of Borno urges Nigerians to embrace unity, peace

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, has called on Nigerians to prioritise unity, peace, and development as fundamental pillars for the nation’s progress.

The revered monarch made the appeal during the vibrant Deba Cultural Festival held at the Emir of Deba’s palace  of Gombe state Wednesday.

The festival showcased Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and drew a diverse audience, including traditional rulers, government officials, and community members.

Speaking at the event, the Shehu underscored the importance of harmony in a nation as diverse as Nigeria. He urged citizens to set aside ethnic and religious differences, emphasising that the country’s strength lies in its diversity.

“Unity, peace, and development are what Nigerians need the most. Our cultural heritage should remind us of our shared humanity and the importance of working together for the common good,” the Shehu said.

He commended the Emir of Deba, Alhaji Ahmad Usman, for organising the festival, which featured traditional dances, music, and cultural exhibitions, fostering national cohesion and mutual respect.

The Emir of Deba also highlighted the historical significance of Deba as the cultural headquarters of the Tera people, tracing its origins to Yemen.

He emphasised the role of traditional institutions in fostering development and unity among communities.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeeen Abbas, represented by Hon. Adamu Randa of Ningi/Warji Federal Constituency, praised the festival organizers and pledged to replicate similar events in his constituency. Abbas also announced a donation of N5 million to support the initiative.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau, called for renewed efforts to preserve culture and tradition. He highlighted the role of cultural pride in mitigating societal vices, citing his observations from visiting over 60 countries.

“Neglecting culture and tradition is the root cause of societal issues such as rape, armed robbery, and other crimes. We must prioritize cultural values to promote harmony and reduce criminal activities,” Jatau noted.

The festival’s success reaffirmed the importance of cultural heritage in strengthening unity, fostering peace, and driving development across Nigeria.
