Senator Aliyu Wamakko was born on March 1, 1953, in Wamakko, Sokoto state. He enrolled into Sokoto Teachers’ College from1968-1972. After graduation, he worked as a teacher from 1973 to 1977 before proceeding to the University of Pittsburgh in the United State for further education. He graduated with B.Sc. in August 1980.
His political career started as the chairman Sokoto Local Government from 1986-1987. He was elected as a member of the constituent assembly in 1989. It was as a result of his admirable and remarkable performance in the constituent Assembly coupled withhis good performance in the previous offices he held, that GovernorAttahiru Bafarawa picked him as his deputy, in 1999.
Given his sterling and remarkable accomplishments, he was re-elected as deputy governor in April 2003. He resigned as deputy governor of Sokoto state in March 2006.
It was as a result of his widely acknowledged superlative performance as a deputy governor that he was subsequently elected as the executive governor of Sokoto state which he served for two terms before coming to the senate in 2015.
Senator Wamakko has an amazing passion and knack for the educational development of his people being an educationist par excellence. He was a teacher and head teacher before travelling to the USA in 1977 for further studies.
As soon as he assumed office as the governor of Sokoto state, he declared a state of emergency on education by allocating an unprecedented 22% of the state budget to education.
He equally embarked on a massive infrastructural development in all the educational institutions to enhance a conducive teaching and learning environment.
As a concrete demonstration of his avowed determination to eradicate illiteracy in the state, he abolished school fees, and increased feeding allowance of all the students by 100%. This singular gesture encouraged a massive influx of out-of-school children to school. To the admiration of the citizens of Sokoto state ALU on October 29, 2013 inaugurated the Sokoto State University.
He described the milestone educational culture of the caliphate state that will beam its light to other parts of the country and beyond. After a meritorious and worthy service as the governor of Sokoto state, his people of Sokoto North senatorial district persuaded him to come and serve them at the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigerian, a request he gladly embraced because of his love to serve his people after they lost interest in Senator Ahmed Maccido.
The sojourn of Senator Aliyu Wamakko in the hallowed chamber of the Senate has been widely acknowledge to be of immense benefit to the good people of Sokoto North and moulded the entire Sokoto state, owing to the people-orientated bills he has sponsored in the Senate.
