Senate writes Tinubu, says we won’t be rubber stamp

The Senate Wednesday wrote President Bola Tinubu about its operational readiness for full legislative business, part of which is receiving communications from the executive arm of government and according them appropriate considerations.

It also decided to formally inform President Tinubu  about the election of Godswill Akpabio as President of the Senate and Jibrin Barau as the Deputy President.

Senate’s resolutions to this effect were taken during closed door session held before plenary on Wednesday.

Announcing resolutions taken at the closed door session which lasted for about three hours , the  President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio said as it is always the practice  after inauguration, they will formally inform  President Bola Tinubu of its readiness to receive executive communications from him.

The Senate, he added, will also write to  International Parliamentary bodies on the Assembly of the 10th Senate, as well as write a congratulatory message to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, on their elections.

For its smooth operations, the Senate has set up a committee to look into the welfare of members, with Senator Isa Jibrin (APC Kogi East) as chairman.

Meanwhile, the red chamber has proceeded on a three  weeks holiday by fixing  July  4th,  2023 as next date of plenary.

Briefing journalists after the session, Senator Abdul Ningi, (PDP, Bauchi Central),  said although the 10th Senate will not be confrontational, it will definitely not be a rubber stamp one. 

He disclosed that the Senate will inform the President about its powers and privileges as contained in its rule, legislative powers and privileges Act as well as the constitution. 

He said, “We are not going to be confrontational as we have never been, but we are not going to be laid back legislators to make sure we understand some things, we make sure they understand our powers to make sure that we understand our limitations. 

  “We will outrightly inform the executive of our powers under the constitution, under the House rules and under the legislative matters privileges. We are not going to be caged.”
