Nigeria’s Former Vice President Namadi Sambo has endorsed the formation of the League of Northern Democrats (NLD) saying it is a veritable platform that will help address the challenges confronting the north.
Sambo, who said this when he hosted the leadership of the group led by former Kano state governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, at his residence in Abuja, added that the formation of the body is timely as it would lead the way in the quest to address the multifarious issues northern Nigeria is faced with.
He said: “It is very worrisome to note how insecurity has crippled agriculture, while threatening education and health of our children and women, and these have continued to widen the net of poverty and inequality among people of the north and indeed the entire country.”
The former vice president, while assuring the group of his support noted that: “Irrespective of our political lineage, we must continue to leverage on our respective experiences and resources to play our part in order to meet the aspirations of our people while engendering sustainable peace and socio-economic development,” he added.
Also, in a letter of appreciation to the convener of the group, Dr. Umar Ardo, former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Abdulrahaman Dambazau, said all hands need to be on deck to address the deteriorating situation in the north.
Dambazau appreciated the effort and commitment of the group to tackle the challenges facing the region noting that, “The deteriorating conditions in the whole of northern Nigeria, which include insecurity, banditry, illiteracy, endemic poverty, drug abuse, proliferation of arms and collapse of our institutions, require urgent and coordinated action.
“The LND presents an opportunity to galvanise the efforts of our leaders and stakeholders to address these challenges and reposition the north for a more prosperous future.”
