Rivers Channels TV reporter kidnapped in Port Harcourt

Gunmen have kidnapped the Channels Television reporter in Rivers state Joshua Rogers.

Rogers was reportedly whisked away around 9:00pm on Thursday in front of his residence at Rumuosi in Port Harcourt.

The reporter was driving his official Channels Television branded car when the hoodlums accosted, pointed a gun and took him away in the same vehicle.

Rogers was said to be returning from his official assignment in Government House after a trip to Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni local government area for a government event when the incident happened.

The gunmen were said to have contacted his wife and demanded a N30 million ransom for his release.

His cameraman confirmed the incident and appealed to his abductors to set him free unconditionally.

Though the police had yet to release an official statement on the incident, a source close to the victim said the matter had been reported to the police, the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Navy.

There were outcries among journalists in the state as they called on his abductors to set him free unconditionally.

A group of reporters under the auspices of the Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro Journalists Forum condemned the abduction of Rogers.

The group, in a statement by its President, Philip Owajioboro and Secretary, Alllwell Ene, described the abduction as barbaric.

The group said: “The Forum frowns at and views his abduction as not only barbaric but a threat to journalism practice in Nigeria

“We, therefore, call on the Nigeria Police and indeed all security agencies to without delay ensure the release of our member Joshua Rogers unhurt. We also urge his abductors to release him unconditionally without any iota of delay.
