House of Representatives House Committee on Education has rated Kebbi state low in all aspects of primary and secondary education and also accused the state government of awarding all manner of school contracts to political patronage who don’t have knowledge of civil engineering.
Th e committee which visited the state during the week, on its oversight functions led by Hon. Zakari Mohammed, on a courtesy visit to the State Deputy Governor Alhaji Samaila Yombe Dabai, said they visited several schools across the state and there was nothing to write home about as the standard of education in both primary and secondary schools has not been met. He further described the standard of education in the state as a complete failure stressing that unless something serious is done to avert further deterioration of the sector the future of education is in danger.
Zakari however, expressed dismay that despite the huge amount expended in the sector by the federal government, the state has nothing to show in that regard, He recalled that from 2005 to date Kebbi state enjoyed over N10 billion naira as a grant, but still school buildings are in deplorable condition. He added that the committee noted with dismay that the contract awarded by the State Universal Basic Education Commission (SUBEC) for renovation of schools were mostly awarded to politicians and reason why there were very poor jobs. “We visited a Secondary School in Jega where over 500 students were accomodated in a rented apartments away from the school premises, this doesn’t speak well of a state where it governor was once a parliementarian” adding that last year the state took 32 position out of 36 in WAEC. Responding the Deputy Governor Yombe, assured that the state government would correct all observations and shortcomings noticed by the committee. He said had the committee visited the state some two years ago when the present administration under Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu took over, would have seen how deplorable the condition of education looked like in the state
