Rep Ogewu celebrates Igede Agba with Oju, Obi constituents

The member representing Oju/Obi federal constituency of Benue state, Hon David Ogewu has called for the greater unity of his constituents as they prepare for a lavish Igede Agba yam festival billed for Tuesday, September 5 in Oju LGA headquarters.

The event of a communal yam festival being organised for the sons and daughters of Igede nation is the first singular effort by an Igede politician since the nascent democracy in Nigeria.

Speaking with Blueprint, Monday, on the preparation of this year’s Igede Agba yam festival, Hon. Ogewu said the occasion would be led by the Adirahu Ny’Igede of Igede nation, His Royal Highness, Chief Ogah Ero, a retired Commissioner of Police.

He said the event would cement the fractured relationship among the different clans and sub-communities within the land, in order to forge a united front for positive change and development.

“This is an opportune time to cement our relationship. The Igede Agba itself signifies the oneness of one father, the Agba, because we are children of one man. The divisions and squabbles over ephemeral things have to stop,” he said, calling on all sons and daughters of the land to gather at the event for greater unity.

The Igede are the sub Saharan people found in Oju, Obi and parts of Gwer local government areas of Benue and Yala in Cross river states of Nigeria. Their major preoccupation is farming and hunting.

Amidst eroding cultures and traditions, the Igede of Benue state have maintained some aspects of their existence.
