As the world celebrates Red Cross Day, members in Plateau state marked it with environmental sanitation exercise within communities of Jos, the state capital, just as its secretary in the state, Mr Menasseh Panpeh, urged residents to be hygiene-conscious.
Panpeh said in marking the day they deemed it necessary to specially undertake health sensitisation and environmental dirt-cleaning.
He said: “The environment and the water over flowing from the gutter is very dirty, and it portent serious danger on the health of the people.
“It can easily lead to contamination and other infections related diseases.”
Panpeh said already there were cases of diarrhoea and voting in the stat, adding that dirty environment was aggravating it.
“We are calling on the general Public to inculcate in them the habit of personal hygiene, through washing of hands before and after eating; they should also wash their hands properly, using detergents or ash after defaecating.”
Our correspondent observed that both male and female members of the Red Cross gathered at Zololo Junction where they broke up a sealed drainage that was filled up by refuse.
At least 10 persons had been reported dead from cholera and related ailments the last couple of days.
