The Benue State House of Assembly Thursday ordered the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, to step aside from her official duties.
This decision was made to allow the house to investigate the recruitment exercise embarked upon by the board.
The motion was moved by the Majority Whip, Hon. Peter Ipusu, during plenary in Makurdi.
Ipusu expressed concerns that the chairman had ignored the house’s resolution to suspend the ongoing recruitment of primary school teachers.
Instead, she released a statement allocating new cut-off marks to various local government areas based on their performance in the Computer-Based Test (CBT).
The motion was seconded by Hon. Alfred Berger, who stated that the chairman lacked the integrity to continue leading the board.
Berger emphasised that the law establishing the board gives powers to the Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) to recruit teachers, and the department of quality assurance of the board only supervises the process.
However, the Majority Leader, Mr. Saater Tiseer, countered the motion, suggesting that the chairman should be given a fair hearing.
Despite this, the Speaker, Hon. Hyacinth Dajo, ruled in favor of the motion, with 21 members voting in support and five against.
Dajo instructed the chairman to hand over to the Permanent Member I and constituted a seven-man committee to investigate the exercise and report within seven days.
