Quality education key to decadence in society, Okowa

Wife of Delta state governor, Dame Edith Okowa, has attributed the falling standard in education sector to decadence in the society.

Okowa stated this Wednesday in Asaba during the inauguration of Quality Assurance Monitoring vehicles and instructional materials for effective implementation of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) programme in the state.

The wife of the governor, who noted that impacting the future generation with quality knowledge was key to addressing the decadence in the society, urged teachers to be passionate about their profession.

She also urged those charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the instructional materials get to the end-users to discharge such role effectively, rather than dumping them at  different local government areas.

Okowa, however, noted that there had been a lot of restructuring efforts in public primary and secondary schools across the state by the state government.

She said that that was  to address the decadence in the society  and ensure quality education for the future leaders.

”In demonstration of his commitment and passion for the education sector, the state governor guaranteed the payment of the state’s counterpart fund required for schools in the state to benefit from UBEC

“The collaboration between the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and UBEC, has led to the procurement of Quality Assurance Monitoring vehicles and distribution of instructional materials in SUBEB,” she said.

Also speaking, the Secretary to the State Government Chiedu Ebie, said that over N6 billion was contributed by the state government as counterpart funding for the programme.

He also disclosed that Delta was one of the few states that had paid their counterpart funds.

The Commissioner for Education, Basic and Secondary, Mr Patrick Ukah, said that the essence of the procurement of the instructional materials was to enhance effective teaching and learning in the state.

Ukah assured that the materials would be distributed across the state.

The representative of the Director, UBEC, South South Zonal office, Uyo, Mr Omuta Obanovwe, thanked Gov.  Ifeanyi Okowa and the management of SUBEB for their giant strides in the educational sector. (NAN)
