Protests strengthen democracy – Ex IPAC Chair Ameh 

 

The Coalition for Democratic Accountability and Electoral Reform (CODER) has stated that the right to protest is a fundamental human right recognised under various international and regional instruments.

Convener of the coalition, High Chief Peter Ameh, in a statement on Sunday said “protest by the citizens strengthens democracy because when the government listens to protesters, it reinforces democratic principles and encourages citizens’ participation”.

According to Ameh, “when protesters’ voices are heard, and their concerns are addressed, the have feeling of being  represented and valued”.

He stated that “protests engenders positive change as protesters’ demands can lead to meaningful reforms and improvements in policies, laws, or social issues”.

Ameh said there was need to understand the people’s concerns and needs.

and address their grievances to make informed decisions.

Other benefits derivable, according to the CODER convener, included building of trust and maintening social cohesion.

He said, “by listening to protesters, the government can create a win-win situation, strengthening its relationship with citizens and improving the overall well-being of society”.
