Protesters defy curfew, resume protest in Jos

Despite 24-hour curfew, protesting youth stormed major streets of Jos North Local Government Area (LGA), waving Nigerian, Russian and Palestinian flags.

Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, said his Command is poised to maintain peace, with reports of planned hijack of the protest to cause mayhem.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, had imposed 24-hour curfew in Jos North with an extension to Bukuru metropolis, after some protesters looted properties, and threatened marketers to shut down or join the protest.

The State Commissioner of Police, in a statement, Monday, said following actions of unscrupulous elements amidst the peaceful protest in the state, the Command has robustly made deployments to various areas within Jos metropolis and Bukuru to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

“Intelligence report at our disposal suggests that hoodlums are planning to cause mayhem in the State and it is glaring that the miscreants are at the verge of hijacking the peaceful protest to massively loot shops within the commercial nerve of the State.

“The Plateau State Police Command is poised to maintaining peace in the State and will not allow any person or group of individuals to plunge the State into unruly turmoil,” it said.

The Police command, said in discharging its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property and ensure public safety, is fully committed to ensuring that criminals do not execute their evil plans.

“Therefore, the Commissioner of Police Plateau State Command, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, warns Plateau residents to comply with the State Government curfew as anyone found violating the directive will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the extant laws of the land,” the police command said.
