Premier League: Manchester United cage De Gea with fresh contract

David De Gea has signed a new deal with Manchester United – ending speculation over his future.

The United No.1, who was out of contract at the end of this season, has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal, with the option of an extra year.

Sources close to De Gea have confirmed the Spain international, recognised as the best goalkeeper in the world, has agreed to stay at United, rather than seek a move abroad.

United are expected to confirm the agreement within the next 24 hours, possibly before Saturday’s game at home to Leicester , with De Gea understood to be earning a basic of £250,000-a-week, rising to £350,000-a-week with performance-related clauses.

Keeping De Gea is a major coup for United, who risked losing the 28-year-old for nothing after allowing him to enter the final year of his contract without having signed an extension.

Paris Saint-German and Juventus were monitoring De Gea’s situation, with a view to agreeing a pre-contract agreement with him from January 1, but United have been able to convince De Gea to stay put at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer recently said that tying De Gea down to a new deal is an important statement of intent as Manchester United look to challenge for trophies again.

The Old Trafford giants’ struggles since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson could have been a whole lot worse were it not for the 28-year-old goalkeeper.

Gea’s fine form has led to regular speculation about his future since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, with only paperwork preventing him returning to Spain with Real Madrid four years ago.

“I think you need to ask David and the club (why the deal had not been sorted yet),” he said.SHOW MORE

“I’ve obviously not been involved in all the discussions, but I’m very – or pretty – confident that we’ll get this sorted.

“David’s never, ever said anything else to me than he loves this club, he wants to stay here and he’s had a fantastic time, so let’s hope we just get it over the line.”
