The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have suspended an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Bayo Obadiah, attached to the Area Command, Ikorodu, Lagos State, over allegations of extortion, just as 16 other policemen were sanctioned for professional misconduct.
A bulletin released by the public complaint rapid response unit (PCRRU) of the Force yesterday in Abuja, said N834,000, being monies allegedly extorted from the public, were also recovered and returned.
It added that as a result of targeted campaigns across the country, two terror suspects were apprehended following the PCRRU face-to-face confidence building with citizens in Akoko area of Ondo State.
The bulletin explained that part of the money recovered include: N100,000 previously extorted from a woman in Kano state, who reportedly got her money after she contacted the PCRRU.
“A total number of 764 complaints were recorded in the Q3 2017, with Lagos state command topping the ranking table with 180 cases, 23.56 per cent, followed by Rivers state with 102 cases, 13.35 per cent and FCT with 87 cases, 11.39 per cent.”
On the other hand, Sokoto and Plateau state commands recorded no complaint in the period under review, the report said.
PCRRU noted that in the period under review phone calls were the most preferred channel of lodging complaints with 447 telephone calls received, 58.5 per cent; 203 messages, 26.57 per cent, were received via whatsapp; 19 messages, 2.49 per cent, via twitter; six messages, 0.71 per cent, via facebook; three sms, 0.39 per cent, one bbm, 0.13 per cent and others including 29 petitions and media publications, 3.80 per cent.
