Police launch investigation as masked men kill security guard, burn Lagos spare parts market

Unknown mask men Tuesday allegedly invaded Akere spare parts market, killed a security guard and burnt down the market in Ajegunle area of Lagos state.

Our correspondent gathered that one person was confirmed dead immediately after the masked men struck and burnt down the market.

Goods worth billions of naira were completely burnt down.
An eyewitness who spoke with our correspondent said the masked men came with four motorcycles carrying two persons each with guns along with a shuttle bus with seven persons all masked, started shooting sporadically at 3.00am to scare residents off.

In the process, the mask men reportedly killed the taxi park security guard who tried to stop them.

He stated that the mask men attempted the same thing last week Thursday but they were overpowered by the local security while the market leaders reported to the DPO, Tolu Post, and he gave them assurance that police would handle the situation.

Confirming the incident, Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer, an SP,  Benjamin Hundeyin, said the command has commenced investigation into the early morning fire at the Akere Motor Spare Parts Market, Tolu, Olodi, Apapa, Lagos.

He said the fire which started at about 0300hrs was put out by a combined team of officers from Tolu Police Division and the Lagos State Fire Service.

“Sadly, a 65-year-old security guard lost his life in the incident,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has urged Lagosians to remain calm as the State Criminal Investigation Department has been directed to take over investigation towards unraveling the true circumstances surrounding the attack.

He equally calls for restraints in giving any form of extraneous coloration to the incident.
