Police canvass local vigilante in Abia communities

Area commander, Nigeria Police, Umuahia, Mr Odion Ekeinde has stressed the need to set up local vigilante groups in Umuahia and Ikwuano local governments areas of Abia state.

He disclosed this Friday while addressing stakeholders during a town hall meeting on ways to tackle crimes in the areas under the jurisdiction of the command in Umuahia.

The area commander noted that, for crime to be nipped in the bud, there must be effective community policing where both the traditional rulers and the

Police are working in synergy to achieve greater results.

He, however, appealed to the people to assist the Police by providing them with vital and useful information that would help them in curbing crimes in the area.

The area commander warned officers and men of the command not to engage

in any sharp practices that would negate the image of the force, stating that any operative caught maltreating innocent citizens would be dealt accordingly.

Speaking at the occasion, HRH Eze Philip Ajomiwe, chairman of Umuahia North traditional rulers council, extolled the zonal commander for organising the town hall meeting.

He said setting up local vigilante groups is very important but added they had  set up one before now while emphasising the need to encourage the youths that would be so deployed by given them  stipends as morale booster.

The Traditional ruler of Oriendu Autonomous community,Ohuhu Umuahia North said as the Chief Security officers of the various communities that they are handicap in terms provision of needed logistics.
