The policemen in Mabushi have arrested a business man for allegedly beating man to a state of coma in Wuse.
According to police source, the 32-year-old business man, Ndubisi Akpan, a resident of Gosa, along Airport Road in Abuja, was detained for assault and causing bodily harm.
An eye witness to the incident, Monday Paul, lodged the complaint at the Mabushi Police station.
During questioning, Akpan said the victim prevented a commercial vehicle meant to convey some bags of cement bought by him from a depot, he therefore denied beating the man to coma.
“We only engaged ourselves in fighting and both of us sustained injuries none of us was in a coma as they have accused”.
The police, not satisfied with the statement, yesterday arraigned Akpan arraigned in Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrate Court.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Abdullahi Alhassan, confirmed that Akpan committed the offence because the victim prevented a commercial vehicle meant to convey some bags of cement from a depot.
The prosecutor further said the accused had been convicted previously for a similar offence.
Alhassan noted that the offence was contrary to Sections 265 and 246 of the Penal Code.
When the charges were read, Akpan however, denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.
Consequently, Magistrate Aliyu Shafa granted the accused bail in the sum of N300, 000 with one surety in like sum, adding that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned hearing till May 13.
