Police arraign 4 for giving ‘false information’

Four persons have been docked in Oredo Magistrate’s Court for alleged conspiracy to give false information bordering on diversion of public funds.
The accused, Jonathan Owaibor, Egharevba Jacob, Flora Oyakhilome and Goodluck Uwaifo were arraigned on a two-count charge by operatives of Zone 5 of the Nigerian Police Force.
The accused persons, who were granted bail, are facing a two-count-charge of offence punishable under Section 125 (A)(1) of the Criminal Code Law of the defunct Bendel state.
Police prosecutor, Inspector P. Agbonifo, told the court that the accused persons had, on December 15, 2015, in a written statement at AIG office Zone 5 headquarters, Benin City, falsely accused one Solomon Oboh and four others of diverting N1 million being association, vigilance group funds.
The prosecutor claimed that the accused persons’ written statement was aimed at causing the defendants to be charged to court, knowing that they were innocent of the alleged offence.
He stated that the false information was with the intention of causing police to use its lawful power to injure and annoy the defendants.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The presiding Magistrate, F. E. Akhere, adjourned the case till December 13, 2017, for further hearing.
