Plateau violence aimed at overshadowing nation’s achievements – CAN

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has condemned acts of extreme violence that plagued some communities in Plateau state as the 2023 came to a close.

The paramount cleric in his New Year message, Monday, lamented that these incidents were attempts by ‘enemies of progress’ to overshadow the nation’s achievements and joy.

He said, “As the year (2023) drew to a close, the enemies of progress sought to cast a shadow over our joy with acts of extreme violence in some communities on the Plateau.

“Our hearts go out to the innocent lives lost and the communities shaken by these senseless attacks.”

The Archbishop expressed gratitude for the divine protection over the past year and called for unity among Nigerians in the wake of these challenges.

“It is by Almighty God’s grace that we have been preserved. Now, more than ever, we must come together, refuse to be discouraged, and remain resolute in our commitment to building a united, peaceful, and prosperous nation,” he urged.

Archbishop Okoh extended prayers for the victims and their families, while also making a plea for peace.

“Our prayers intensify for the souls we have lost and for the bereaved families. We pray to Almighty God to guide us towards pathways of peace and prevent such tragedies from recurring,” he said.

The cleric emphasised the importance of unity and diversity as foundations for a stronger Nigeria, saying: “In unity, there is hope, resilience, and the power to rebuild. Let us embrace our diversity and allow it to be the bedrock upon which we build a stronger, more harmonious nation.”

Archbishop Okoh encouraged Nigerians to approach the new year with a sense of purpose and commitment to the nation’s betterment, counseling: “Let us draw strength from our faith, our shared values, and our collective resolve to overcome the obstacles that confront us. Together, as one united people, we can create a Nigeria where peace, justice, and prosperity are realities for all.”

The CAN President also invoked divine blessings for the year ahead, thus: “May the transformative era that has begun to unfold for our nation in 2024. Let us march forward with hope and determination, and may God’s blessings be upon Nigeria.”
