Plateau lawmaker backs Fire Service on improved funding, infrastructure

A member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Abel Nansak Nimchak, on Monday at plenary urged the state government to provide adequate funding, modern equipment, and infrastructure to the Plateau State Fire Service.

This call came amidst a series of devastating fire outbreaks across the state, including the recent incidents at Katako market, Zamko market, and the old airport roundabout, which resulted in significant losses.

According to the lawmaker the Plateau State Fire Service “is currently facing challenges due to insufficient funding, outdated equipment, and inadequate staff, hindering its ability to respond effectively to fire emergencies”.

He recalled that in November 2024 alone, there were 35 recorded fire incidents across the state.

Nimchak appealed for adequate funding and equipment, provision of sufficient funds for modern firefighting vehicles, communication equipment, and personnel, as well as allocating necessary funds to upgrade the State Fire Service’s infrastructure, including headquarters and stations, amongst others.
