Peer pressure: Group sensitises over 1,600 adolescent girls In Kaduna

A group under the auspices of SKY Girls, a girl-focused empowerment movement has sensitised over 1,600 adolescent girls in Kaduna on self-esteem in Kaduna

The Account director, SKY Girls, Benedicta Ogbian, during the sensitiation and launching of SKY Girls in Kaduna during the weekend explained that their aim was to empower adolescent girls to stay true to themselves.

“We are empowering the girls to be true to themselves and what they believe in, to make choices that are true to them, to resist peer pressure.

“We are also building their capacity to be confident and bold to be who they want to be without being timid,” she said.

The Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Kaduna State University (KASU), Prof. Hauwa’u Evelyn Yusuf, who is also a girls advocate admonished the girls not to give up, adding that they should be focused, be a goal getter, she said.

“As a girl child don’t allow anybody to suppress you, following the normative standard and values,” she said.

She urged the adolescent girls to always speak up whenever they are molested or abused.

“We are also catching them young to fight against Sexual and Gender Based Violence. We raise girls who uphold values and morals,” she said.

The Kaduna State Program Manager, Society for Family Health (SFH), Dr. Tanimu Salisu, advised the girls to remain undeterred.

According to him, the sensitisation will also tackle mental health among adolescent girls.

“We are training the girls to take it up upon themselves by improving their self efficacy,” Salisu said.

He therefore called on parents to support their daughters in order to achieve their dreams.
