Chairmanship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been declared winners in 20 council areas in last Saturday’s local government election in Delta state.
While the results for Isoko South and Isoko North were still being expected, chairman of the Delta state Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), Moses Ogbe, said elections did not hold in Ndokwa East, adding a new date would be announced for the exercise.
Similarly, he said a run-off election would be conducted in eight out of the 20 wards in Ethiope East where the Returning
Officer, Rev. Oke Okokotu, had declared the exercise inconclusive.
Ogbe had announced that chairmanship candidates of the PDP in two council areas of Ethiope West and Patani were returned unopposed as none of the opposition political parties fielded candidates for the areas.
Besides, he said the PDP councillorship candidates for the 20 wards in Patani council area were returned unopposed following the failure of the opposition political parties to field candidates for the seats.
Ogbe described the exercise was generally peaceful, adding that it would be used as a litmus test for the 2015 general election in the state.
He said: “From reports we got from the 25 local governments across the state, I can say categorically that there was peaceful election in all the areas except a few areas where some miscreants attempted to disrupt the process.
“We have reports in a few areas where some politicians attempted to disrupt the process. It would appear that many of them have not learned their lessons at all when we are talking of a new Nigeria and we must learn to put things right.”
