Partnerships key to airline growth, NCAA DG tells operators

The Director-General, Civil Aviation (DGCA) Captain Musa Nuhu has said cooperation and alliances among airlines remain the best option in order for them to effectively tap into the huge market opportunity in the industry.

He said cooperative behaviour and alliances among airlines has become inevitable for Nigerian airlines as it is the prevalent order of aviation businesses in other climes.

Captain Nuhu spoke as a Keynote Speaker at the 27th edition of the annual conference of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) with the theme: “Aviation Industry: Changing Times, Changing Strategies.”

The NCAA helmsman said “For a fact, global airline industry is one of the most competitive industries. Therefore, to effective tap into its huge market opportunity, cooperative behaviour and alliances among airlines became inevitable as it is prevalent in other climes.”

According to him, “Synergy, collaboration, cooperation or merger is the rule of the game. I want to encourage Nigerian airlines to avoid I-want-to-do-it-alone as reflected in their lone-wolf operational tactic. While I want to appreciate our operators for a job well done in terms of the spirit and the impact, we urge airlines to partner with their willing foreign counterparts through code sharing in developing Nigeria’s aviation industry.”

He added that by nature and approach Nigerian carriers should manifestly embrace collaboration and exhibit sustained commitment lest average Nigerian carriers become ever more fragmented and less competitive with mere individual identities.

Speaking on the forthcoming audit of the country’s aviation sector by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Capt. Nuhu said Nigeria is prime to excel again as the country has a lot riding on the modest credentials of existing regime of robust regulations and almost-a-decade of zero accident in schedule flight operation.
