Over 70% of 43m housing units in Nigeria substandard

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, has said over 70% of Nigeria’s 43 million housing units, do not meet the basic standards of habitability, safety, sanitation, accessibility, and infrastructure as outlined by the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO).

He stated this at the Renewed Hope Housing Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) 2025 Summit with the theme: ‘Leveraging PPPs for Housing and Urban Development’, Monday, in Abuja.

The keynote speaker stated that only 3.30% of households have access to water, 24.00% have access to sewage systems, and just 51.70% are connected to the national grid.

“These challenges highlight the need for a dual approach to housing and urban development in our country. This includes slum upgrades and urban renewal to address existing deficiencies, and the construction of new housing units to meet the growing population’s needs.

“I am pleased to report that the ministry is addressing these challenges through the Renewed Hope Housing Programme and the National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme, in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Under a PPP framework arrangement, we are working to deliver 100,000 units with a Consortium of Developers,” the minister stated.
