Against the backdrop of divisive tendencies and agitations in the land, some prominent figures in the Niger Delta region on Wednesday in Abuja declared that the support of the zone to the unity and development of the country remained unshaken.
The leaders, who made the declaration in Abuja at the 13th Niger Delta Merit Award ceremony organised by a group called Promoters of Good Governance, said the Nigerian project has gone a long way on the part of development -driven nationhood than to be truncated by whatever divisive tendencies or outright agitation to that effect.
Specifically, Senator Mathew Urhoghide ( PDP, Edo South) who was honoured with the man of the year award at the ceremony, said the unity of the country should not after about 60 years of nationhood be jeopardised by whatever interest from any quarters .
“Our diversities should not in any way be exploited for divisiveness but rather continue to serve as pillars of unity for the country as always done by leaders across the six zones in different circumstances, one of which was the way our Northern brothers joined in vetoing the refusal of Presidential assent to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) bill in 2001,” he said.
He however added that for the unity of the country not to be threatened from time to time from whatever divides, justice and fairness must be ensured at all levels in governance, especially at the federal level which serves as the centre hold of the entire entities called Nigeria .
Other awardees at the occasion were Hon Chukwuma Nwazanko and Chief James Ochei, represented by Miss Blessing Bassey while Senators Clifford Ordia, Gershom Bassey, Sam Anyanwu, Mao Ohuabunwa, Abiodun Olujimi, etc also graced the event.
