Youths from the West Africa sub-region yesterday stormed the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, demanding a stop to Illicit Financial Flows (IFF) from Africa, and blaming high rate of unemployment on the development.
The youths under Public Service International (PSI), who were in Abuja for a two-day workshop on Tax Justice, assembled at the AYA roundabouts with placards of different inscriptions.
Some of the placards read: “No to tax heaven, implement AU report in IFF, Africa is bleeding, Halt Illicit Financial Flows, among others.
Numbering over 500, the youths matched from the roundabout to the Headquarters of the Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS), where a letter of demands was handed to the president of the commission.
At the commission, both NLC coordinator of Tax Justice campaign, Comrade Eustace James and the coordinator of Human and Trade Union rights of ITUC-Africa, Comrade Joel Odigie, said African leaders must ensure multinationals operating in the continent pay required tax.
James on his part said the youths were there to submit a letter of demand to the ECOWAS Commission for onward delivery to the various heads of government, telling them that the youths were demanding tax justice.
The letter, which was received by representative of the ECOWAS commission president, Mr. Steven Narte, was signed by General Secretary ITUC-Africa, Kwasi Adu-Amankwah and the PSI regional secretary for Africa and Arab countries, Sani Baba Mohammed.
