Osun state police command Tuesday arraigned a 38-year-old man, Adekunle Rotimi, before a magistrate’s court sitting in Osogbo, for attempting to kill a woman police while escaping from court.
The police prosecutor, Anifowose Saheed, told the court that the defendant attempted to kill one woman police Babatunde Omotayo when he wanted to run away from court on February 18, 2025.
He alleged that the defendant grabbed the woman police in the neck inside fish pond and wanted to strangulate her.
But, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the two count charges of attempt escape from court and attempt killing leveled against him.
His counsel, Dauda Oyewale, urged the court to grant him bail in a liberal term, appealing that the defendant will stand his trial.
However, the prosecutor urged the court to decline the bail, saying that the defendant was standing trial on the day he attempted to run away, and granting him bail will jeopardize the prosecution.
The police said the defendant was remanded for unlawful possession of firearms and he told the prison officer that he wanted to urinate when he made an effort to run away and he wanted to kill the woman police who followed him.
Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with one surety in like sum, saying that the surety must be a landowner in the state.
Magistrate Ayilara adjourned the case to May 8, for hearing.
